Egypt Transit Visa & Sinai Only Stamp Guide (2026)

Not every trip to Egypt requires a full tourist eVisa. Depending on your arrival airport and how long you intend to stay, you might be eligible for a transit waiver or a regional stamp.

Navigating Egypt’s Transit and Regional Rules

Miscalculating these rules can lead to fines or being denied boarding. This guide breaks down the logistics for travelers in 2026.

The "Sinai Only" Stamp (Sharm, Dahab, Taba)

If you are flying directly into Sharm El Sheikh (SSH), Saint Catherine, or Taba, you may be eligible for a free "Sinai Only" stamp.

  • 📅 Validity: Up to 15 days.
  • 📍 Geography: You cannot leave the Sinai Peninsula. No trips to Cairo, Luxor, or Alexandria.
  • 🌍 Who is eligible: EU citizens, US citizens, and several other nationalities. Check our Requirements Hub for full list.
EGEVisa Tip: If there is any chance you might want to see the Pyramids on a day trip, apply for the full eVisa now. You cannot "upgrade" a Sinai stamp once you have landed.

Cairo Transit Visa Rules (2026 Update)

If you have a layover at Cairo International Airport (CAI):

Under 6 Hours

Must stay in transit area. No visa required.

6 to 48 Hours

Eligible for transit visa to leave airport (hotel stay). Must show onward ticket.

Over 48 Hours

Legally required to have a standard tourist eVisa.

Entering Egypt by Land or Sea

Most travelers arrive by air, but the eVisa is also valid at major maritime ports and specific land borders (like the Taba crossing from Israel).

Cruise Travelers

If you are arriving via a cruise ship at Alexandria or Port Said, the cruise line often handles a "landing permit," but for independent travel, a Multiple Entry eVisa is the safest option. See our Multiple Entry Pricing for details.

Transit & Arrival FAQs

Can I visit the Pyramids with a Sinai Only stamp?

No. The Sinai stamp is strictly for the eastern coast of the peninsula. To visit Cairo or the Nile Valley, you must have a valid Egypt eVisa. Use our Comparison Guide to see why the full eVisa is often better.

Do I need a visa if I’m just changing planes in Cairo?

If your layover is under 6 hours and you do not leave the international transit zone, you do not need a visa.

Can I get a transit visa on arrival?

It is possible for some nationalities, but the process is slow. For a stress-free layover, having your eVisa pre-approved allows you to exit the airport immediately to enjoy a quick tour of the city. If you encounter issues, see our Troubleshooting Guide.
